Hope on a String

I got a phone call from a firm I interviewed for today. HR told me their client needs had changed and so hiring had stopped. The flooding of disappointment somewhat obscured what he was telling me next, but I caught the fact that I interviewed very well and I would be kept on file if other openings became available. An insider told me they're beginning to hire for their Palo Alto and San Francisco offices, so these two factors combined give me hope. Right after this I checked my email and HR from another firm asked me when I would be available to talk today. I wanted to shout in the email, CALL ME ANYTIME! EVEN AT MIDNIGHT! Obviously that wasn't a reasonable answer. I wish I could know now. It's killing me. Just put me out of my misery please.

I haven't really thought about what I would do if I didn't get an offer from this place. I haven't landed an interview elsewhere. This firm really is sort of my last glimmer of self-created hope. I just sat at Starbucks for a while, trying to decide how I felt. It was like a mixture of panic, frustration, hope, and finally, I was just like, fuck it. So then I baked some chocolate cupcakes.

 Therapy through baking.

I Am 25 Years Young

"I think the reason why twentysomethings are so fixated on age is because we feel a pressure to be a certain way at 23, at 25, at 29. There are all of these invisible deadlines with our careers and with love and drinking and drugs. I can’t do coke at 25. I need to be in a LTR at 27. I can’t vomit from drinking at 26. I just can’t! We feel so much guilt for essentially acting our age and making mistakes. We’re obsessed with this idea of being domesticated and having our shit together. It’s kind of sad actually because I don’t think we ever fully get a chance to enjoy our youth. We’re so concerned about doing things “the right way” that we lose any sense of pleasure in doing things the wrong way. Youth may be truly wasted on the young." --Ryan O'Connell, "Why Do Twentysomethings Always Feel So Old?"
This TC post is resonating. I would go deeper and reflect upon it, but he already said everything that I wanted to say. Plus, I have to go watch City Hunter.

What Do I Doooooo

I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.

Well, I do know what I need to do, but I don't know how to do it. Must seek the help of a mage.

Do or Do Not. There is no Try.

One of my friends got into medical school today, and another one was accepted into a top-notch law school. Feelings of happiness flowing. It makes up for the less-than-welcome news I received yesterday.

At least this has been a memorable birthday. The fact that I'm 25, and have no job. But this is not meant in a tone that's like, oh, I feel sorry for myself. How pitiful. Waah waah waah. It's more like, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! I have no time to wallow in sadness. I must expend resources on seeking gainful employment.

Come on, Brandy, you can do it...

Pensieve Entry

So much has been on my mind lately. I've just had a lot more time alone to think about things, between making formatting revisions on my thesis, looking at jobs, and part-time tutoring. This post will be random because I literally am pouring out everything that's stored in my head.

It's been a little over a week since Nina was put to sleep. So far there hasn't been a day where I don't think about her. The first few days, I couldn't stop crying. Any little memory I had that came up in my mind of her would trigger an overwhelming flow of emotion. Sadness. Anger. Guilt. Regret. I couldn't really separate them; they just all sort of emerged together and tangled me up into an emotional mess. The final moments of her life just kept replaying in my head. I couldn't get away from them, the images of her struggling to breathe while I was rushing her to the clinic, the spilled blood everywhere. I honestly could say this has been the worst form of emotional pain I've been through. My heart just ached.
I will never stop missing her. All I have left of her now is her dog tag and a paw print I preserved in clay. I think that's enough tangible memory for me though. There was something bittersweet I found in the quote, "When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure." My memories of Nina are gold.

It seems like my career and relocation plans are facing some challenges. At first when I found out how long the entire process would take, I was really frustrated. Frustrated that it wasn't going smoothly and as how I intended. But after I took some time to think about it, I felt that it was maybe a blessing in disguise. Being here at home longer means I get to spend more precious time with family and friends, relax for a while longer before I become crazy busy again, and just reflect on myself and my life during much appreciated moments of being alone. I do believe all big events in our lives happen for a reason. It's been demonstrated to me time and time again in my own life. Whatever happens these next few months or weeks, I'll go with the flow. It seems to have worked relatively well in the past.

I think my parents are beginning to worry that I don't have a boyfriend or a potential inkling of one. I don't really know what to tell them. Sometimes, I don't really even know what to tell myself. I think I really screw things up for myself. I do believe it's true that it's not hard to be happy. I just have to open my heart to people who are willing to open theirs for me. And there have been windows of opportunity. I find myself really, really wanting to give everything I can offer to someone, emotionally, time-wise, commitment-wise (though I definitely don't mean that in a super-serious, ball-and-chain way), because I think I've reached that point where I'm able to again. But instead, I complicate things for myself by staying fixated on the people, the person, I can't and shouldn't be thinking about. I tell myself not to think about it. It works for a while, because I convince myself differently each time.
You're not really feeling what you're feeling.
That's not what you should be feeling.
Don't take things seriously.
It would never work.
I feel like I'm just fighting myself to no avail. It's like Lindsey Lohan in rehab. Relapse is inevitable. Rargh! In a way, that's also why I'm so eager to go to Beijing. I know it's silly to run away from your issues (in this case, literally), but at least it means I'll have a fresh start, be distanced from this internal struggle I've been having for a while now. In Beijing, I will grow. I will mature. I will find someone who is right for me. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

It actually felt super good to get that out. Girls are stupid huh? Well, we're entitled ;)

ANYWAY, onto a lighter subject near and dear to my heart. I love the warm weather. I forgot how lovely summer in LA can be, especially since I usually take advantage of time off from school to travel and do school-related stuff (as sparingly as possible) during these months. It's especially gorgeous at night. I went for a run tonight and I literally felt like I could just run, and run, and run. I didn't feel tired at all. The breeze on my face felt so calming, and my mind was just blank. I simply was.
Later on I was lying down on the grass, looking up at the sky and listening to Johannes Linstead on my iPod. By the way, he is the reason I have discovered a deep attraction to new age flamenco. Check him out; he is awesome and amazingly talented. Anyway, the sky was especially clear tonight. Or maybe I just don't usually notice it. I could see so many stars, and the moon was just hanging out to my right. I felt true tranquility at that moment. The feeling was incredibly peaceful. No rush, no anxiousness, no negativity. I could have lay there forever, because everything just seemed so simple. And I think I fell in love with the simplicity.

Fountain of Youth

You know when you were growing up and you saw all the adults doing cool things that you as a kid weren't allowed to do? Then you would wish you were an adult so you could do things like drive a car, spend money, and stay up late.

Well, adulthood is overrated. Hear that kids?? Stick to being a kid. And if you're a kid who's reading this, know that there are adults out there who are jealous of your life.*
I'd almost give anything to go back to the days where my biggest worry was about how my mom would yell at me because I got sand in my hair again.

I just want to have one day where I can play all day. Haven't had one of those in so long.

The simple days.

*If you're a kid you really shouldn't be reading this.

Declaration to Begin Reverse Aging

I just looked at myself in the mirror. I look like shit. Literally. New resolution. Sleep at midnight this entire week, no matter how much work I have. If I have to I will ask for an extension. School is not worth sacrificing my fleeting youth.

Adjustment Costs

Back in LA, where...
I am no longer a pedestrian, but a driver
Space is no longer a luxury but a built-in feature
Shanghainese no longer punctuates the conversation around me
"Exotic" food like burritos are no longer a treasure hunt
I no longer have my bed to myself but instead have to share it

Meet Nina, a mini Pinscher. She is the smallest thing and I can easily pick her up with one hand. I researched the breed online and they are one of the most hyperactive, attention-seeking dogs out there. I don't think my mom did the research before deciding to adopt her from my uncle. My mom is also an elitist when it comes to dogs--she'll shun mutts from the shelter but oohs and aahs over Nina since she's purebred. So in the end, I didn't get to choose my pet, but this one is a handful so I think I'm good for now.

I finally had the meeting today I've been anticipating for...oh, about a year now. My announcement to quit has been made official, and it went over a lot better than I thought it would. The director was especially receptive, which I was pleasantly surprised about, because it's never easy breaking this kind of news to a program that has invested so much in you. What a relief--it really feels like a great burden has been lifted off my shoulders. A good indication that I made the right decision? But this also means I'm potentially working on a shorter deadline than I initially thought. I could be graduating in May, which is half a year from now. This puts something else on my mind...the prospects of being employed after everything is done and settled. Time to start job hunting now. Now...now...now...

Why is it so hard being an adult? I wish I was a child, or Nina, who plays around with chew toys all day and just snuggles up to nap in my sheets once she becomes tired.

5 Things I have Been Doing Instead of What I'm Supposed to Be Doing

#1 One of my all time favorite loves. Making collages. It took me the entire night but didn't feel like it. Will I regret it tomorrow? Yes. Why? Because now this means I got NOTHING done for my professor. But it's pretty. Teehee. I'm taking a picture of it now because once Linda leaves I will probably not get a chance to see my creation again. And I'm not afraid to post it here because the chances that she'll come across this blog is 0.0001%.
Downside: My computer, desk, and room in general now looks like a glitter cloud exploded.

#2 I found mysoju.com. I started watching 這裡發現愛 (Wish to See you Again). In terms of the storyline, it's ok. 還好. But I always get excited when I see scenes filmed at locations in Taipei I recognize or have been to. There's one scene in episode 3 where Michelle Chen walks out of a party. No other place but Room 18, right down to the black/red exterior and funky-cool sinks in the wraparound bathroom. Taipei's only so big, meaning there's only so many appropriate locations you can film. The same feeling occurs when I see UCLA pop up in popular media. Result of my recent rekindling with 偶像劇? No sleep until 3 AM, which makes for a very lazy Brandy the next day. Rargh. I keep telling myself I will break the pattern of unhealthy sleeping time...but it's almost 2 AM and look what I'm doing right now...

#3 A new-found obsession with yelping. Not that I didn't use Yelp before--I did a lot to find new places, but I've acquired this sudden interest in writing reviews. Every time I come back from a new place there is this irresistible desire within me to go on Yelp and recite my experiences. I find myself almost wanting to go to new places just so I can review them. What is this? Is there a name for this? Is it a syndrome?

#4 Thinking about aging. And how much I hate it. Yes, it is now approximately 2 weeks before my 24th birthday. How old that sounds. 24. 24. 24. 24. I liked the number better when it was just a popular TV action series. Or Kobe Bryant's jersey number. To a female such as myself, 24 screams 6 years away from 30. Inching toward the next 40 (if I'm lucky) years of my life that can most likely be characterized as mundane, less-than-glamorous, and more preoccupied with making ends meet than finding means to an end. If that makes any sense. Is it bad that I'm beginning to get this inkling of an urge to lie about my age?

#5 Cooking. Anyone who knows me knows that me + kitchen = a good probability for disaster. But since moving back home I've concocted a number of things that have yet to end in substantial disaster. Teriyaki chicken wings, BBQ glazed ribs, pasta. At worse they've been meh. At best they've actually been edible and even...dare I say it...good? There's this miso-ginger salmon recipe sitting on my desktop waiting to be put into action. Maybe there is hope for me after all! Tomorrow I tackle noodle soup with shrimp and fish balls, per mom's request.

PS What I'm supposed to be doing, only Buddha knows. I think it involved an assemblage of research, contacting professors in Shanghai and other interviewees, finding data, working on a book project, or some sort of combination involving all of the above? Hrm...

Time to Get my Shit Together

I just realized I've been acting pretty recklessly since school let out...I really haven't gotten as far as I've wanted on reading and writing and work, and I only have myself to blame for it. It's embarrassing to discover that at a time in my life when I am supposed to be getting my act together, I spend an entire Saturday recovering from a hangover...I just hope it won't get to the point where I end up disappointing people who I'm obligated to, both on a professional and personal level.
I really need to get my shit together. Here's to working hard for the next few weeks.
